Batter up, Baltimore. The Orioles are back for the team's 60th season in town. And infielder Ryan Flaherty is gearing up for his third season at Camden Yards.
"I'm excited to get going this season, play winning baseball and help this team anyway I can," said Flaherty, 27, of Federal Hill. "Whatever position they need me to play, I'm willing to be flexible and just trying to help out."
The Orioles kick off their season this Monday, facing off against the Boston Red Sox. Flaherty got his first career grand slam against the Sox in September 2012, with the Orioles winning 9-1.
Flaherty, originally from Portland, Maine, took a break from spring training to talk to us about his favorite baseball player growing up, his worst habit, and more.
Worst pet peeve? People who drive slow.
What song/songs are you loving and you hating right now? I like everything from rap to country. The worst is anything that's heavy metal.
Last concert/gig you went to? Jay Z
Your worst habit? Drinking coffee. Lots of it.
Trend that has exceeded its natural lifespan? Facebook. That's been going on too long.
Last movie you liked and the last you disliked? I liked "Lone Survivor" and I disliked "Don Jon." A horrible movie.
TV show you can't get enough of? "Dexter." I didn't see it when it came out so I'm watching all the episodes now.
Favorite and least favorite fashion statement? Shoes would be my favorite. My least favorite would be baggy pants. That's just tired.
Favorite place to get a drink in Baltimore? Anywhere in Federal Hill.
Last great meal you had? A burger at Abbey Burger Bistro.
Best advice you ever got? "Swing hard in case you hit it."
Favorite baseball player growing up? Derek Jeter.
Pre-game rituals? I'm not really superstitious, but working out, eating, playing cards. Those three things.
Favorite thing about Baltimore? Baltimore is great because it has real people. It's not fake.
