Heather Spiker-MacPherson, 32, has always dreamed of being a chef.
On Friday, the culinary student at Stratford University and staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Reserves will be able to put her skills to the test at a "Top-Chef"-style competition at Baltimore Green Works' EcoBall.
The annual EcoBall, held at the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park and Museum, will feature live music, food and drinks, as well as the cooking competition featuring Stratford University students (for more information, go to baltimoregreenworks.com/ecoball). The event will help Baltimore Green Works fund its Sustainability Speaker Series and other eco-friendly events.
Spiker-MacPherson, who is from Ligonier, Pa., and now lives in Pasadena, has never competed in something like this before, but said she is excited to see what she and the others can do.
"Plus, I am very competitive," she said.
Spiker-MacPherson would eventually like to be a personal chef, but for now she took the time to talk to us about, among other things, her past job at Cracker Barrel and her worst cooking experience.
Worst pet peeve? Lack of respect. We should respect each other more!
What song are you hating/loving right now? I'm loving "Seize the Day" by Avenged Sevenfold and I cannot stand "Gangnam Style." It's everywhere!!
Last concert/gig you went to? Volbeat at Rams Head.
Your worst habit? Smoking. I am a workout fanatic but can't stop smoking.
Worst or most embarrassing cooking experience? When I worked at Cracker Barrel and my dumplings came out in one mass instead of separating.
Guilty pleasure food? I love cheesecake. I could eat it all the time, but it has to be New York cheesecake. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!
Trend that has exceeded its natural lifespan? YOLO. It took me forever to figure out what it meant.
Last movie you liked/disliked? I recently watched? "Hotel Transylvania." It was pretty funny.
TV shows you can't get enough of? "The Walking Dead," "Duck Dynasty" and "Chopped."
Last great meal you had? Fogo de Chao was so yummo!!!
Favorite dish to make? Sauerbraten and spaetzle.
Favorite and most loathed fashion statements? I don't really follow fashion. I kind of have my own style.
Favorite place to get a drink in Baltimore? I don't drink so unfortunately I wouldn't know.
Favorite celebrity chef? Gordon Ramsey.
Best advice you ever got? Treat others as you want to be treated.
Favorite thing about Baltimore? The crabs and the Inner Harbor.
