Super Art Fight, a live art competition full of characters, storytelling and witty commentary, is coming home this weekend to celebrate its 100th show.
It's where Kelsey Wailes, 23, will be defending her title as champion.
The concept is simple: Artists go through a series of bouts in which they have 25 minutes to compete using an array of pre-chosen themes until the audience deems one champion. There is a twist, however, as participants are allowed, and encouraged, to "attack" each other's art. Super Art Fight has even grown to be a nationwide event, traveling throughout America for shows. Wailes has been part of the Super Art Fight team for the past five years. "I never know what to expect from Art Fight," said Wailes, a Taneytown native. "It sounds cheesy, but you can always expect something unexpected with this group of hooligans."
Wailes will face off against Brandon J. Carr for the championship, held at 9:30 p.m. Saturday at the Ottobar. When Wailes isn't competing, she works as a teacher, artist, and self-proclaimed kaiju (a Japanese word for "strange creature"). Wailes took a break from school to talk to us about her distaste for vampires, her Art Fight strategy and more.
Worst pet peeve? People crinkling plastic potato chip bags while eating them.
What songs are you loving/hating right now? I'm loving the new stuff from Muse and Arctic Monkeys. I universally hate all country music at any given time.
Worst habit? Swearing profusely.
Trend that has exceed its natural lifetime? Vampires. Please, can we have mermaids and mummies now?
Last movie you liked/disliked? Favorite: "Pacific Rim." When I left the movie, my face hurt so much from having a stupid big grin on my face the entire time. Least favorite: "Star Trek Into Darkness." I left that movie not remembering a single thing about it.
TV shows you can't get enough of? "Hannibal" and "Doctor Who."
Favorite/least favorite fashion statement? Favorite: a really good coat and scarf. Least favorite: vivid patterned leggings and puffy lumpy winter coats that make people look like caterpillars.
Best advice you ever got? F---in' do it!
Favorite place to get a drink in Baltimore? The Ottobar, if only because I think that's the only place in Baltimore I've ever gotten a drink.
Last great meal you had? Homemade pasta from my parents' house.
Reason you won last year? I'm not sure what led me to win last year. It was a crazy match, crazy fun and crazy close. One fight last year, my finishing move was to make the entire board a periodic table of elements, complete with several blocks of elements. That was probably my favorite final move from a winning match.
Favorite thing about Super Art Fight? The people I've met and all the adventures it's taken me on.
