Wine is the theme right now at Wit & Wisdom, inside the Four Seasons Baltimore, and assistant general manager Justin Yu, 27, has been there to oversee it all.
As part of Baltimore's 10-day Winter Wine Celebration, which concludes on Sunday, Wit & Wisdom has been offering specials and events, along with more than 20 other restaurants.
Yu, a native of Fremont, Calif., relocated to Harbor East in May after working for Four Seasons in Santa Barbara, Calif., and Seattle.
"Winter Wine Celebration is a great way for people to explore the sometimes unknown and vast world of wine," he said. "Sometimes wine is intimidating, and we want to make it less so."
On Saturday, Wit & Wisdom's sommeliers will lead a class on how to skim a wine list and pick the right wine. There is also a daily "Cellar Raid," offering wines that are not usually available by the glass.
Yu turned his thoughts away from wine for a moment to talk about his new home, his habit of Instagramming pictures of all his meal and more.
Worst pet peeve? Rude people
What song are you hating/loving right now? Loving: "Home," Phillip Phillips; "Some Nights," fun.; anything Mumford and Sons. (Not) Hating: I love all music, but I have to say, not a huge fan of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," by Taylor Swift.
Last concert/gig you went to? Haven't been to a concert recently, but if it counts, "Bubba" killed it at Cat's Eye Pub last time I was there!
Your worst habit? Taking pictures of everything I eat, before anyone can touch it and ruin it! Also, constantly being on my phone at the dinner table Instagramming or Facebooking said pictures.
Favorite wine? I love a big, bold, juicy red like The Prisoner by Orin Swift of Rutherford, Calif.
Trend that has exceeded its natural lifespan? Calling everything "hipster."
Last great meal you had? Hersh's, a fun, casual place with delicious food and tasty cocktails.
Best/worst thing about your job? Best thing: talking with guests, making memories. Worst thing: when someone is disappointed.
Favorite and most loathed fashion statements? Favorites: awesome shoes, the return of the well-dressed gentleman, patterned socks. Loathed: Uggs and miniskirts, flannel.
Favorite place to get a drink in Baltimore? My neighborhood joint: Palmere's. Wine: Cinghiale. Cocktail: Rye. Martini: Charleston.
Any interesting situations you've had to deal with as manager? Every day is a new day and a new set of interesting situations. I'm just along for the ride!
Best advice you ever got? Always go with your gut instinct
Favorite thing about Baltimore? Change. So much change is happening and now there are so many great places to eat, drink and hang out. I've only lived here since May and it's changed so much even since then!
