We're surprised Megan Auman had the time to chat with us. After all, she's not only a jewelry designer and metalsmith, but an educator and entrepreneur (yes, we feel like slackers, too).
Auman, 30, began her eponymous jewelry line after graduate school in 2006, and her work, found at meganauman.com, is sold at more than 60 stores. And she's helping to shape the next generation of designers. In 2009, she created Designing an MBA at designinganmba.com, focusing on business thinking for designers. "I love that my job involves a mix of running my own creative business and helping others do the same," Auman said. The Jonestown, Pa., resident, who also teaches at Towson University and MICA, shared with b the jewelry she never leaves home without and her disdain for 1980s fashion.
Worst pet peeve? I hate it when people make broad generalizations about an entire group of people. Every time I hear something that "all the millennials" or "all women" do, it drives me crazy!
What song are you hating/loving right now? I'm loving "Biggest Man in Los Angeles" by Andy Grammer. Whenever I feel frustrated with my career or life, that song reminds me that I'm right where I'm supposed to be. I'm hating "Rolling in the Deep." Not because I hate Adele, but because a fitness class I was in used that song for the ab sequence (man, that song is long!) and now whenever I hear it my stomach muscles wince in pain!
Your worst habit? I'm a total slob and my house is always a mess. I've tried for 30 years to change, and I just can't!
Trend that has exceeded its natural lifespan? Remaking movies. I love old movies, but I'm so tired of seeing remakes as the majority of what makes it to theaters.
Favorite/least favorite band? No matter what I'm listening to, I always come back to Jack Johnson and Elvis Presley.
Jewelry you never leave home without? I go through phases but I always wear my rings: My wedding band/engagement ring on my left hand, and five rings on my right — two that I made and a stack of three that I got from a fellow jewelry designer. Right now I'm on a mega earring kick, so I won't leave the house with a big but classic pair of earrings.
Last movie you liked/disliked? My friend and I took her 3-year-old to see"The Muppets,"and I was surprised by how much I liked it. It had the right mix of nostalgia and current pop culture. I love old musicals, and it had some of that charm as well.
Last video that made you snort with laughter? My husband sent me a clip of a couple fighting on their iPhones, with Siri trying to translate to diffuse the argument! So funny!
Favorite/least favorite trend in design or jewelry? I don't love the current trend of brass jewelry, but that's mostly because I want people to buy steel jewelry instead!
TV shows you can't get enough of?:"Raising Hope"; "New Girl";"Psych";"The Daily Show";"The Biggest Loser"(my guilty pleasure)
Food you hate? Raw onions. I love them cooked and I put them in everything, but I can't stand them raw.
Favorite place to get a drink? I'm a huge craft beer/microbrew fan, so Alewife is high on my list. Who doesn't love 40 beers on tap!?
Favorite and most loathed fashion statements? My favorite is tall boots, especially riding boots. I could live in mine. My least favorite is anything '80s inspired. I remember enough of the '80s to know those styles should never be repeated!
Favorite quote/saying? "Make a statement every day" Yes, I know it's my tag line, but it really reflects the way I want to approach life.
Favorite thing about Baltimore? I love that Baltimore has such a history and legacy when it comes to craft. And I love the pride people have for that in this city.
