1. Kinetic Sculpture Race

Forget that other race that's trying (and seemingly struggling) to be a yearly event. American Visionary Art Museum's ingenious human-powered competition, now in its 14th year, will always be our racing preference. We support anything where the most coveted prize is the Mediocre Award -- right in the middle of the pack. Bonus this year: Mr. Rain's Fun House's Kinetic Evening on Friday, a fundraiser featuring a five-course Latin-inspired meal ($30-$70; a private reception beforehand at 6 p.m. features a sneak peak at competing sculptures). Race starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at AVAM, 800 Key Highway, Federal Hill, and travels throughout the city. Free for spectators. kineticbaltimore.comLloyd Fox/Baltimore Sun
