Parren J. Mitchell

U.S. Representative Parren J. Mitchell, who earned his master's degree from UM, was the first African-American from Maryland elected to the <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORGOV0000131" title="U.S. Congress" href="/topic/politics/government/u.s.-congress-ORGOV0000131.topic">U.S. Congress</a>. He represented the state's 7th district from 1971-1987.
