5. One-Eyed Mike's

Dinner for two, including wine and beer, at a bar: $81. Holy crap, how'd that happen? I thought I was doing a story on bar food, not fine dining. But believe it or not, there's some very fine dining going on at One-Eyed Mike's.

I told my date to get whatever he wanted, since I was treating, and for once, he actually ordered something more than a burger. The night's special, surf and turf, included a thick steak stuffed with prosciutto and gorgonzola cheese and a meaty, filler-free crab cake. It was also $35 (yeah, I made sure somebody put out that night).

Unlike the other places I visited, One-Eyed Mike's has a separate dining area, adding that extra bit of refinement that might justify a few pricey specials in addition to regular menu items like a barbecued chicken sandwich or three-cheese lasagna (both under $10). This isn't some yuppie bar, though; it's still the place the guy who lives upstairs frequents and where a well-behaved old Labrador retriever named Duke roams free, creating a casual atmosphere that may well be worth that $81 to you. --Lisa Wiseman
