As a father of two young children, my mind is never far from the violence that has scarred and devastated communities across our city. In 2013, the Maryland legislature enacted one of the nation's most progressive laws to regulate the use of firearms. By strengthening the assault weapons ban and requiring the reporting of lost or stolen firearms, the law makes Maryland, and Baltimore, a little safer. The law is far from perfect, but I am incredibly happy that Maryland did not try to wait for permission from the congressional leaders to work to make our streets safer. We led the effort.
