Visual arts: 'Timothy App'; 'Jo Smail and William Kentridge'

App, who teaches at MICA, is fresh off a show and midcareer retrospective in Washington. This show will feature seven new large-scale paintings that explore geometric abstraction. South African-born artists Smail (also a MICA faculty member) and Kentridge exhibit the results of their collage collaboration sent through the mail over four years. Upon receiving a drawing, each artist would either add new marks or subtract existing ones. "Timothy App: Recent Paintings" and "Jo Smail & William Kentridge: Dialogue" run through Oct. 24 at Goya Contemporary Gallery, 3000 Chestnut Ave. Free. goyacontemporary.com. — MCM
