Members Sandy Asirvatham, piano and vocals; Frank Russo, drums; Amy Shook, bass; Chris Kennedy, guitar; Tom Williams Jr., trumpet; Mike Lollis, trombone
Influenced by Billie Holiday, Nick Drake, Maria Schneider
Notable For years, Asirvatham wrote for a living. Then she found a new creative outlet in jazz improvisation. Her CD, Memoir, came out last year.
Quotable Music "has been the pathway to a more intuitive, less neurotic form of storytelling than the prose writing I had been working on previously," Asirvatham said. "Combining words and harmonies and rhythms just seems to come a lot more naturally and fluidly than storytelling on the page for me. I just didn't know that until fairly recently."
If you go Sandy Asirvatham performs two sets with Amanda Olsavsky at 8 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Saturday at An die Musik Live, 409 N. Charles St. Tickets are $15 for one set or $25 for both. Call 410-385-2638 or go to andiemusiklive.com. The band: sandysmemoir.com.
