Don’t miss the ultimate foodie event, The Baltimore Sun's Secret Supper

New this year

For the first Polar Bear Plunge, back in 1997, jumping in the water was pretty much all there was to do.

Things have gotten a lot more elaborate since then.

These days, the plunge is an all-day affair -- known as Plungefest -- complete with live music, food, vendors and plenty of events held inside warm tents.

New for 2012 are a Pee Wee Plunge, set for 11 a.m. Saturday, where kids 8 and under can dip themselves in a kiddie pool, and the Wawa Coffee Center, offering complimentary coffee (plus tea and juice) to attendees.

Also in store for this year is an expanded Astro Events Kids Zone, with activities to keep youngsters occupied; the Robert Andrew Salon & Spa, where plungers and their accomplices can get massages and other treatments in exchange for a donation to Special Olympics; and the Rams Head Ice Lodge and Beer Garden, hosting live music by Fuel, Sticktime, Hot Tub Limo and The Rovers.
