For SPCA, a 140th anniversary party something to wag about

The Maryland SPCA celebrated its 140th anniversary last weekend with a soiree at the Maryland Historical Society, where a new Maryland SPCA exhibit is displayed through June 28. Outside, guests enjoyed cocktails during the first nonrainy night in days. Some even wagged their tails in delight - that would be the nonhuman guests: a couple of SPCA pooches.

The Family Tree's Great Chefs' Dinner, held at The Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, one of spring's most popular shindigs, was paradise this year. Literally. Sure, the sell-out crowd got a dinner prepared by this year's guest chef, Jean-Claude Garzia from Bermuda's Beau Rivage restaurant.

Jane Fonda raises funds for ALS center

Jane Fonda has won rave reviews for her performance as a woman with ALS - more commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease - in the Broadway show 33 Variations. But she had a tougher audience last week when ALS patients from the Robert Packard Center for ALS Research at Johns Hopkins, and their families, attended a performance in New York for a center fundraiser.

Competitors kick up heels at DanceSport Championships

Baltimore was the setting for the true Dancing With the Stars last weekend, as USA Dance - the official organization of competitive ballroom dancing - held its 2009 National DanceSport Championships at the Renaissance Harborplace Hotel.
