Baltimore Sun readers weigh in on this year's Oscar race.
Best Picture: Atonement
I can truly say that the movie Atonement was one of the best pictures I have seen in quite a while. It was deep, thought-provoking, and certainly kept my attention span until the conclusion. The story line and superb acting performances of all the main characters, in my estimation, deeply exemplified and enhanced the qualifications for an Oscar winner.
Freda Garelick, Baltimore
Best Director: Ethan and Joel Cohen
I think it's the Coens' year. Not only did they brilliantly direct No Country, but the Academy wants to reward them for their whole body of work. This would be a very opportune time.
Andrew Italia, Germantown
Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis
I hate to go with the favorite and the actor considered always at the top of his game. However, Daniel Day Lewis's performance in There Will Be Blood deserves all the accolades and is my choice. My wife who did see Sweeney Todd thinks Johnny Depp deserves his first best actor award.
Fred Davis, Pasadena
Best Supporting Actor: Javier Bardem, No Country for Old Men
Not since Hannibal Lecter have we seen such a spellbinding killing machine wreak havoc on the silver screen.
Dimitri Alexander Hajimihalis, Hunt Valley
Best Actress: Marion Cotillard
My favorite performance this year also came in my favorite film of this year: Marion Cotillard in La Vie en Rose. Cotillard gave what I call a "Full-Body Performance" as Edith Piaf. I was in her hip pocket from start to finish.
Scott Carberry, Baltimore
Best Supporting Actress: Ruby Dee
Ruby Dee plays a mother whose son has made a successful career as a criminal is torn apart as she watches him abandon the morals she instilled in him as a child. In American Gangster, she plays a role that requires her to play a role; an idle figure, but one who cannot stay quiet much longer. She deserves the Oscar for drawing the viewer into her guilt for raising a dangerous and murderous son.
