Classical

Critic's choice: Thomas Ades

For her inaugural season as music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Marin Alsop is showcasing several composers she calls the "Beethovens of today."

She is turning the podium over to some of them. A case in point is Thomas Ades, who will make his BSO debut in May. The 36-year-old British composer has been upsetting the norm for more than 15 years. (His first opera, Powder Her Face, would have been banned for indecency not too many decades ago.) His intricate Violin Concerto from 2005, with soloist Anthony Marwood, promises a bracing experience. Ades will conduct his concerto, as well as two symphonies by Beethoven.

The performances are at 8 p.m. May 15-16 at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, 1212 Cathedral St., and May 17 at the Music Center at Strathmore, 5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda. Call 410-783-8000 or go to bsomusic.org.
