2013 arts highlight reel

Any highlight reel of the local arts scene in 2013 would have to include "House of Cards," the acclaimed 13-episode, star-studded series filmed in Baltimore. In effect, the online streaming service Netflix took the word "television" out of the phrase "television show" by completely cutting out the networks for the first time. There would also be a scene set in a federal courtroom tracking new developments in the case of a tiny Renoir landscape that was reported stolen from the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1951. The painting, which resurfaced publicly six decades later, continued to make headlines and engross art lovers in 2013. There would be backstage glimpses of gala reopenings (for the Everyman and Senator theaters), historic firsts (Pearl Jam's debut concert in Baltimore, an overseas triumph for Baltimore Symphony Orchestra music director Marin Alsop) and fond farewells (to Video Americain and author Tom Clancy.) The highlight reel also would contain a disclaimer that newsworthiness, not artistic merit, was used to determine which artworks and events to showcase. -- Mary Carole McCauley
