Rep Stage's 2014-2015 season includes area premieres

Rep Stage, the professional theater company based at Howard Community College in Columbia, has announced its 2014-2015 season, the first planned by its new co-producing artistic directors Suzanne Beal and Joseph W. Ritsch. Themes of transition and transformation are woven through the season, which includes two works new to the region.

Ritsch will direct the season-opening production of "Venus in Fur" (Oct. 1 to 19), a 2010 play by David Ives about a writer/director who experiences a kind of role reversal when he auditions an actress for an adaptation of a 19th century erotic novel dealing with sadomasochism.

Samuel D. Hunter's recent play "The Whale," about a gentle, 500-pound man slowly eating himself to death out of grief over his partner’s demise, will receive its Baltimore/Washington premiere. Kasi Campbell directs (Jan. 14 to Feb.1).

"Circle Mirror Transformation," by Annie Baker, is set in a small town community center where participants is a “creative drama” class get more than they bargained for when the exercises begin. It will be directed by Suzanne Beal (March 4 to 22, 2015).

Dominique Morisseau’s "Sunset Baby," which had a well-received Off-Broadway run last year, will get its regional premiere in a production directed by Ritsch (April 29 to May 17, 2015). Set in a gritty New York world of drugs and thugs, the play focuses on a former underground black-power group leader who returns from jail to reconnect with his daughter.
