Verdi, Puccini, Poulenc for 2013-2014 season at the Lyric

The 2013-2014 opera season at the Modell Performing Arts Center at The Lyric will have a lot in common with the 2012-2013 season -- staged works by Verdi and Puccini produced by Lyric Opera Baltimore, with a concert in between.

There is something substantially more adventurous in terms of repertoire for next season, courtesy of the Peabody Opera Theatre, which will present Poulenc's "Dialogues of the Carmelites." That masterpiece was last performed at the Lyric in 1984 by the old Baltimore Opera Company.

Lyric Opera Baltimore will open its season with Puccini's "Tosca" Nov. 1 and 3. (This season's Puccini pick was "La Boheme.")

The cast includes soprano Jill Gardner in the title role and tenor Dinyar Vania as Cavaradossi, but the big news is that the eminent bass-baritone Eric Owens, a great success at the Met in Wagner's "Ring," will make his role debut as Scarpia. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra will be in the pit, conducted by Steven White. The stage director will be James Harp, the Lyric's artistic director.

A new production of Verdi's "Nabucco," designed and directed by Bernard Uzan, will be presented May 9 and 11, 2014. (This season's Verdi offering, to be performed next week, is "Rigoletto.")

The cast will include baritone Michael Chioldi as Nabucco (he was a stand-out as Enrico in a 2011 Washington National Opera production of "Lucia') and soprano Francesca Mondanaro as Abigaille (she was the exciting Lady Macbeth in Baltimore Concert Opera's "Verdi" presentation in March). James Meena will conduct the BSO.

The concert offering next season will be a celebration of French repertoire on April 25, 2014, featuring two bright young talents, soprano Nicole Cabell and tenor Stephen Costello. Instead of two-piano accompaniment, as was the case at the recent bel canto concert given at the Lyric, this event will have the orchestra of the Concert Artists of Baltimore, conducted by Edward Polochick.

Rounding out the third annual opera season at the Lyric will be the staged production of "Dialogues of the Carmelites" by Peabody Opera Nov. 15 and 17.

A free preview of the 2013-14 season will be given at the Lyric on Sept. 15.
