Virginia Institute of Marine Science Professor J. Emmett Duffy was one of 12 faculty of Virginia colleges and universities to win a state award.
The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia, along with Dominion Resources, recently recognized Duffy and 11 others as recipients of the 2013 Outstanding Faculty Award.
Duffy is a professor of marine science and head of the Marine Biodiversity Lab at VIMS. He is known worldwide for his research documenting how biological diversity affects functioning of ecosystems, said a spokeswoman for SCHEV.
The awards are in their 27th year. Faculty are honored for excellence in teaching, research, knowledge integration and public service.
Duffy and the 11 other recipients were selected from a pool of 109 applications "based on accomplishments that strongly reflect the missions of their respective institutions," the spokeswoman said.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
