The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking the public's comment on the proposed replacement of the narrow bridge on Burkes Mill Road in the James Store area of Gloucester.
VDOT is planning on replacing the bridge over Burkes Mill Pond alongside the dam and small spillway beginning in July 2014. The $1.5 million project will require a complete road closure and detour, said a VDOT spokeswoman.
The existing bridge dates to 1940 and has a 7-ton weight limit for single-unit trucks and 27 tons for tractor-trailers. The new bridge will have a slight width increase by adding shoulders.
The length of the bridge will be about the same. The construction zone will extend to 600 feet on both sides of the bridge. Work is expected to be completed in December 2015.
The project information can be reviewed at the VDOT Saluda Residency Office at 1027 General Puller Highway in Saluda.
VDOT is also willing to hold a public hearing. To request one, send a written request to Sinan A. Rayyan, Project Manager, Virginia Department of Transportation, 87 Deacon Road, Fredericksburg, VA 22405 prior to March 15.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
