VDOT to lift lane closures for holidays

To accomodate holiday travelers the Virginia Department of Transportation will lift lane closures on most major roads and interstates during the upcoming holiday period.

For the Christmas period, VDOT will suspend planned lane closures from Monday at noon through noon Wednesday. Lane closures will be lifted during the New Year period from Dec. 31 at noon through Jan. 2 at noon, according to a VDOT statement.

The AAA motor club predicts 2.7 million Virginians will travel at least 50 miles from home between Dec. 22 and Jan. 1. The estimate represents a slight statistical increase over last year and is partly aided by gas prices that have dipped below $3/gallon in parts of Hampton Roads over the past week.

AAA expects 90 percent of the 2.7 million travelers will use automobiles. Even so, the motor club predicts air travel will increase by 3.2 percent over last year due to lower air fares, a company statement said.

VDOT offers several options for aiding motorists in staying up to date on traffic conditions. Android and iPhone users may download the 511Virginia app and others may use the 511Virginia.org website for similar mapping and traffic cam information.
