Tucanos Brazilian Grill brings South American flavors to Newport News. The chain’s first East Coast location is set to open Dec. 21 in City Center.
The restaurant expects to hire 225 people and is taking applications for all positions at 704 Mariner Row, also in City Center, through Friday, Nov. 30. Applications are also accepted online at www.tucanos.com/employment/application.php.
According to the restaurant’s promotional material, Tucanos “combines the unique serving style of the traditional Brazilian grilling (referred to as churrasco) experience with the flair and festivity of the beaches of Rio de Janeiro...The cuisine features grilling specially seasoned or marinated meats and vegetables (nearly 20 varieties) and then serving them hot off of skewers at each table.”
Like other Brazilian grills, Tucanos gives each table an object with red and green sides on it. Put the green side up, and servers bring you a steady supply of meats and vegetables. Meats arrive on a large skewer, and portions are sliced off onto your plate. Putting the red side up means you need to take a break or are finished eating. If you’re still hungry, check out the 70-item salad bar.
Tucanos was founded in 2000 by Steve Oldham, who spent time in Brazil while working for PepsiCo’s International Restaurant group. He opened his first restaurant in Provo, Utah. Others followed in Salt Lake City, Boise, Albuquerque and Colorado Springs.
The restaurant’s interior features bright colors, sharded tile waves, wood accents, granite counters and plants. There’s a custom bar and outdoor patio area.
Hours are 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Friday-Saturday.
