Here are the comments of Supervisor Christian "Buddy" Rilee at Tuesday night's Board of Supervisors meeting following the presentation of a resolution thanking him for his service. Rilee is leaving the Board of Supervisors as the representative of the Abingdon District after eight years in office.
"I get emotional so I’ll try to get through this. I got my bowtie on so my wife always gets me the right tie but she wasn’t too keen about my bowtie. It’s certainly been an honor and a privilege to serve Gloucester as a supervisor the last eight years. There’s so many people to thank that made it possible. All of you on the board, the present board I’ve been with Louise and Michelle for eight years, and Bobby and Gregory for four, and Carter and John.
"I would even like to thank the past board, Rick Allen, John Adams, Buddy Bland and Ms. Altemus. They were, you know they were instrumental when I came on board. Especially Ms. Garton and your staff, all county employees really. Dr. Kiser and the School Board. I could go on and on, the volunteers in this community are great. Last, but not least, my wife, Mary, and my daughter, Amy, and the rest of my family.
"I gave this my best shot. Hope I’m remembered as one who responded to all the people and I respected all opinions and ideas and viewpoints.
"I wanted try to add a little humor here. I’m not real good at that but Bobby talked about the library and he was instrumental and all. When I ran for supervisor the first time I went to a forum. Mike Wilson was running against me and they asked me a question, 'What have you done the past four years?'
"I was dumbfounded. I didn’t think I’d done anything because we all kind of do things as a board. There's four you've got to count on the board to do anything.
"I said, `Well, maybe next time, if there is a next time, I need to accomplish something.' So two years ago I was concerned about Burleigh Road. You know, somebody got killed on Hickory Fork colliding and I said if someone could just put some solid lines on Burleigh Road. I pestered VDOT for two years so maybe I’ll be remembered for the guy that got the solid lines on Burleigh Road.
"Thank you. Thank you so much."Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
