Commander of submarine USS Newport News relieved of duty

The commanding officer of the Norfolk-based submarine USS Newport News has been relieved of duty, the Navy said Friday.

Cmdr. Christopher Tarsa was relieved "due to a loss of confidence in his ability to serve effectively as commanding officer," according to a news release.

Tarsa was removed from duty by Capt. Paul Snodgrass, the commander of Submarine Squadron 6 at Naval Station Norfolk.

Tarsa assumed command of the submarine in August 2013. He has been placed on administrative duty with the command staff of Submarine Force Atlantic.

Cmdr. Roger Meyer, deputy commander at Submarine Squadron 6, will be in command  until a permanent replacement is named. Meyer previously commanded the submarine USS Miami.
