William and Mary signed 15 athletes to national letters of intent on Wednesday, including three quarterbacks and several athletes who played multiple positions, such as two-way lineman and placekicker Jared Templeton out of Tyrone (Pa.) Area High School and fellow Pennsylvania prep star Luke Rhodes, an all-region linebacker and a record-setting running back at Hollidaysburg Area High.
The class features five players from Virginia, including defensive lineman Jasper Coleman of Richmond's James River High and Jared Velasquez of Robinson High School in Fairfax, an all-region pick as both a defensive back and a running back.
"They're listed at one position, but the flexibility that they present is what we're looking for," said Tribe coach Jimmye Laycock, whose team is coming off an 8-4 record and its second straight playoff appearance.
William and Mary typically looks to redshirt incoming freshmen with an eye toward developing players for five full seasons, but Laycock is open to the possibility of someone earning immediate playing time.
"I don't see it right now, with the returning players that we have, but after we go through spring ball and all that, you never know," he said. "Like I told the recruits, it's kind of the best of both worlds. If there really is a need and they have the ability, we will play some freshmen, but we're not a program that has to play freshmen."
