Tuesday's high school boys basketball roundup: Bruton, Mathews, Surry advance in regionals

Group 2A:

Bruton High’s boys extended their winning streak to 10 Tuesday night with an 89-44 home victory over Goochland in the Group 2A East Regional first round.

Marcus Carter and Lonnie Swinton combined for 26 points in the first half as the Panthers built a 45-23 advantage at intermission.

Carter paced Bruton with 20 points. Swinton added 19 and Kapri Doucet 14.

B.J. Snead led Goochland with 20 points.

Bruton will host Strasburg, a Shenandoah Valley team, in a regional quarterfinal Thursday.

Group 4A:

Grayson Midulla poured in 33 points, sinking five 3-pointers, to lead Glen Allen to a 64-48 home win against Smithfield in the Group 4A South Regional first round.

The Jaguars went ahead 23-9 in the first quarter and maintained a comfortable margin for most of the game, though the Packers' Christopher Pierce had 15 points. ...

Booker T. Washington beat Lakeland 66-56 behind Steven Whitley's 34 points. ...

Norcom overcame King's Fork 54-49, ending the Bulldogs' season.

Group 1A:

Surry County took command in the third quarter and earned a 76-67 home victory against West Point in Dendron in the first round of the Group 1A East Regional.

Dontrae Lyttle poured in 22 points for the Cougars, while Derrick Bailey added 19, Timothy Marsh 14 and Justin Williams 13.

The game was tied at 33 at halftime, but Surry outscored the Pointers 21-13 in the next eight minutes.

For West Point, L.A. Allen scored 25 points and Jeffrey Guerrant 21. Together, they sank nine of the Pointers’ 11 baskets from beyond the arc.

West Point’s Austin Matthews added 13 points. ...

Cody Kelly scored six of his 27 points in overtime and had seven rebounds and six assists as host Mathews edged Franklin 62-57 to advance to a Friday semifinal against an opponent to be announced.

The Blue Devils’ 6-foot-8 Chris Perrault, who had 13 rebounds, went 1-of-2 from the free-throw line with 6 seconds left in regulation to force overtime at 50-50.

Fredquon Lassiter led the Broncos with 27 points, including seven 3-pointers. Mathews’ Deondre Foster had 13 points.

VIS:

Clayton Inmon led Greenbrier Christian with 12 points as the sixth-seeded Gators beat No. 11 Tidewater Academy 42-24 in the Virginia Independent Schools Division III first round.

The Gators held Tidewater to six points in the second half. Greenbrier will play at No. 3 seed Williamsburg Christian at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a quarterfinal.
