WILLIAMSBURG — Host Lafayette outlasted scrappy Poquoson 65-55 in a hard-fought, sometimes sloppy, Bay Rivers District boys game Wednesday night.
The Islanders stayed close for a while, with the Rams up 16-9 after one quarter.
But Lafayette opened a 29-19 lead midway through the second period. The Rams used four 3-point shots to boost the lead, and Poquoson played catch-up the rest of the way.
The Rams led 33-24 at half.
The visitors scrapped back and trailed 47-40 after three periods. They drilled four 3-pointers in the third quarter to stay close.
But the Rams answered every surge and moved on to seal the 10-point victory.
Lafayette outscored the Islanders in the fourth period 18-15.
The Rams played without two starters who sat because of illness. Dewayne Johnson and Logan Buchanan did not play.
Senior Ben Colley, who has a swimming scholarship to North Carolina, scored 15 points for the home club.
John Fitchett had 14 points and Colton St. Cyr added 11 for the Rams. The home team had five players hit 3-pointers, and nine scored points.
The visitors got 41 of their points from two players. Daniel Fisher led all scorers with 22 points. He hit four 3-pointers to help keep his team in the game, while Dylan Hill added 19.
"We did well. Some seniors got more playing time tonight and were able to score," Lafayette coach Tony Traver said. "We were missing the two players, so we are pleased with the win. Poquoson played well, too."
It was Senior Night, and Lafayette honored its seniors in the winter sports.
