Here's a look at how swimmers with Peninsula ties have fared:
Former Williamsburg resident Katie Hoff, struggling with an intestinal virus that left her unable to eat much, finished 20th in the 200 free prelims and failed to qualify for semis. Her time was 2:00.68, more than five seconds off the trials record she set in 2008. She went to the last two Olympic Games but is unlikely to reach London.
In the women's 100 backstroke, two Coast Guard Blue Dolphins finished in the middle of the preliminary pack. Maury High's Madison Hahn was 69th in 1:03.76, and York High's MaryElizabeth Warhol was 85th in 1:04.11.
In the men's 200 butterfly, former Lafayette High standout Ben Colley came in 67th in the prelims in 2:03.03, while Virginia Tech's Matt Baumler — also from Lafayette — was 124th in 2:06.42. Colley soon will head to the University of North Carolina.
In the men's 200 freestyle, Tabb High graduate David Walters — who broke his wrist two months ago in a bike accident, hampering his training — placed 16th in 1:49.71. The former Texas Longhorns star also plans to compete in the 100 freestyle.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
