Old Dominion's Dimitri Batten is very doubtful for Saturday's game against Texas El Paso with a shoulder injury he suffered Thursday against UT San Antonio, coach Jeff Jones said Friday.
Batten, a junior from Kecoughtan High, is ODU's second-leading scorer at 11.4 points per game. Jordan Baker, a freshman from Hampton High, will start in Batten's place, Jones said.
Batten injured his left shoulder early in the second half versus UTSA and had to be helped off the floor. He went to the locker room and didn't return to the game. He injured the shoulder last year, as well.
Jones said the ODU training staff told him that Batten didn't suffer a complete separation, and that he's listed as day-to-day. Jones hopes that Batten can be available for next Thursday's game at North Texas.
Playing for Batten, Baker scored 10 of his 13 points in the second half as ODU defeated UTSA 69-61. Baker averages 4.9 points per game, and Thursday's game was his fourth in double figures this season.
UTEP (17-6, 7-1 C-USA) presents a huge challenge for the undersized Monarchs (11-12, 5-3 C-USA). The Miners, winners of seven in a row, have seven players 6-7 or taller. In a 58-47 win at East Carolina on Thursday, they outrebounded the Pirates 42-17.
