Montgomery in fall stars game
Baseball: Former Bruton High pitcher Mark Montgomery, who is in the New York Yankees’ organization, will appear in the MLB Fall League Rising Stars game at 8 p.m. Saturday on MLB Network.
In the Arizona Fall League, Montgomery has allowed one earned run on two hits and struck out 15 with a save and two holds for the Scottsdale Scorpions.
Before being drafted by the Yankees, Montgomery also pitched for Williamsburg Post 39, Longwood University and the Peninsula Pilots.
He drew the Power’s attention during a tryout with the rival Philadelphia Soul. The AFL begins play in early March.
Defending champion and former Old Dominion standout Izak van der Merwe advanced to the $75,000 Charlottesville Challenger quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over young American star Jack Sock on Boar’s Head Sports Club’s indoor hard courts.

Denis Kudla, who grew up in Northern Virginia, beat Switzerland’s Michael Lammer 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Former Tennessee star J.P. Smith ousted No. 6 seed Bobby Reynolds of the World Team Tennis champion Washington Kastles 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-3).
