Richmond ended VCU’s 13-game winning streak in dramatic fashion Thursday, forcing overtime on Darien Brothers’ miraculous 3-pointer and dominating the extra period to beat the 19th-ranked Rams 86-74 at the sold-out Robins Center.
The host Spiders (13-7, 3-2) led most of the longtime rivals’ initial meeting as Atlantic 10 members before VCU (16-4, 4-1) went ahead by seven with 37 seconds left in regulation. But UR chipped away, cutting the margin to one before a pair of Troy Daniels free throws put the Rams ahead by three with 12 seconds left.
Brothers came off a screen and tied the game at 69 on about a 30-foot shot from a court logo with 4 seconds left, and Richmond maintained that momentum into overtime.
Leading 73-72, UR went on a 9-0 run for an 82-74 lead with 1:40 left. Cedrick Lindsay’s basket-plus-free throw, followed by 3-pointers from Kendall Anthony and Brothers, all but ensured the triumph.
Anthony had 26 points. Juvonte Reddic led the Rams with 20 points and 10 rebounds.
Lyons leads Air Force
Senior Michael Lyons from Newport News, a Woodside High graduate, had 14 points to help Air Force (11-6) earn a 90-48 home victory over New Orleans.
The Falcons shot 36 of 56 (64.3 percent) from the field, including 10 of 18 (55.6 percent) from 3-point range.
