Coastal Plain League:
The Peninsula Pilots earned their way into a decisive Game 3 in their East Division semifinal playoff series, beating the Wilmington Sharks 6-2 Thursday at War Memorial Stadium.
Friday’s 7:05 p.m. game in Hampton will determine which team reaches the Petitt Cup’s final four.
Longwood left-hander Brandon Vick, a Warwick High graduate, was effective as the starting pitcher for 6 2/3 innings. The Pilots went ahead with three runs in the first inning and one apiece in the second and third.
Liberty's Alex Close and Old Dominion's Jordan Negrini hit RBI doubles in the first inning, then Negrini scored the third run on a wild pitch.
The Pilots responded well after a 5-4 Game 1 road loss Wednesday in which they yielded three eighth-inning runs, the last of which scored on a two-out infield single by former Pilot Andrew Amaro of Maryland.
Ernesto Mejia hit his 28th home run of the Triple-A season in the 10th inning, giving the Gwinnett Braves a 3-2 victory over the Norfolk Tides at Harbor Park.
The Tides (62-58), who have 24 games remaining, began the night in a virtual tie with Pawtucket for the IL's wild-card playoff spot. But they finished it in a virtual tie for the wild card with Buffalo (61-57). That's because Pawtucket was swept in a doubleheader.
Mejia batted 3-for-4 and former U.Va. standout Phil Gosselin was 2-for-4 for the Braves.
Danny Valencia, the only Norfolk player with two hits, and Alex Liddi drove in the Tides' runs.

Joe Panik slugged a three-run homer in the seventh as Richmond (58-59) gained its ninth victory in 10 games and fifth in a row, completing a six-game season sweep of Portland with a 4-1 victory in Maine.
Flying Squirrels starter Chris Westcott pitched seven innings for the win, yielding only an unearned seventh-inning run to Boston's Double-A farm team.
