Friday's local baseball roundup: Tides rally, end losing streak at nine

International League:

L.J. Hoes hit an RBI double with one out in the ninth inning and scored on center fielder Cody Grice’s throwing error as the Norfolk Tides (39-36) snapped a nine-game losing streak by winning 5-4 at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a series opener.

Jair Jurrjens (5-4) pitched eight innings for the win, and Jairo Asencio got the final two outs for the save.

Jurrjens yielded four runs in the first three innings, but he found his groove and the Tides came back. Brandon Waring began the way back by hitting a two-run homer in the fourth, and Buck Britton singled home a run in the fifth.

Coastal Plain League:

In their final game before facing the USA Baseball collegiate teams, the Peninsula Pilots (10-10) lost 5-4 to the Florence RedWolves (13-7), who scored twice in the eighth inning.

Eastern League:

Richmond fell for the 10th time in 11 games, losing 5-3 at Reading in a series opener.

Andrew Susac homered for the Flying Squirrels (35-36). The Fightin Phils, who swept the Squirrels in a series at The Diamond, improved to 31-41.
