Inside the PD: Previewing Friday's games

DENBIGH (0-1, 0-0) AT KECOUGTAN (1-0, 0-0)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Darling Stadium.

THE BUZZ: The only district game of the week pairs the Patriots, who had a strong defensive effort in last week’s 12-6 loss to Booker T. Washington, vs. the Warriors, who rode Trenton Cannon’s 149 yards to a 20-14 win over Churchland. Denbigh had 189 yards and four turnovers in that game; Kecoughtan completed 1-of-9 passes with four interceptions.

THE PICK: Kecoughtan, 28-12.

WILSON (0-2) AT MENCHVILLE (0-1)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Todd Stadium.

THE BUZZ: The Presidents have been outscored 62-6 in two games, and the Monarchs were blown out by Woodside 42-3 in their opener. In short, both teams hope to get a little better in this one. Menchville had some success with its passing game behind QB Tyler Mueller (7-of-18, 99 yards) and WR Joron Foster (2 catches, 45 yards).

THE PICK: Menchville, 16-13.

GLOUCESTER (0-1) AT GRANBY (1-0)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Powhatan Stadium, Norfolk.

THE BUZZ: The Comets haven’t had a winning season since 2004, but they got off to a terrific start last week with a 45-9 crushing of Great Bridge behind RB Lawrence Harris’ 110 yards. The Dukes had a brutal opener. Not only did they lose 41-0 to Bethel, they lost QB Aiden Thompson with a high ankle sprain.

THE PICK: Granby, 27-13.

HERITAGE (0-1) AT NORVIEW (0-2)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Norview High, Norfolk.

THE BUZZ: The Hurricanes lost their opener 16-0 to Hampton but gave a strong defensive performance. What they’ll need is more offensive production. RB Khalid Abdullah was held to 33 yards on 14 carries. The Pilots lost their opener to Hickory and then fell to Eleanor Roosevelt of Maryland last week.

THE PICK: Heritage, 21-20.

PHOEBUS (1-0) AT CHURCHLAND (0-1)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Churchland High, Portsmouth.

THE BUZZ: After two poor preseason scrimmages, Phoebus looked like the team to beat again with a 59-7 demolition of Warwick. The Phantoms were so dominant that RB Tony Pittman (9 carries, 154 yards, 2 TDs) had his final rushing attempt midway through the second quarter. The Truckers lost to Kecoughtan despite QB Malik Sexton’s 220 total yards.

THE PICK: Phoebus, 35-13.

WARWICK (0-1) AT BOOKER T. WASHINGTON (1-1)

WHEN: 7 p.m.

WHERE: Booker T. Washington, Norfolk.

THE BUZZ: The Raiders know they can’t possibly be any worse than last week, so they’re looking at this as the season opener in a sense. RB Cardon Johnson (18 carries, 90 yards last week) found some holes, but QB Josh Butler (8-of-18, 3 INTs) had a nightmarish opener. The Bookers evened their record with a 12-6 win over Denbigh.

THE PICK: Warwick, 28-13.
