What appears to be the final hurdle in Phoebus opening its football season against DeMatha at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex has been cleared.
At its May 3 meeting, the VHSL’s executive committee approved the Phantoms’ request to play on Aug. 24, six days earlier than the first contest date. Phoebus will receive no extra practice days and can begin no later than Aug.1.
William Massenburg of Life Through Sports, the game’s promoter, said it will be called the Power Recruit Classic.
“We’re good to go,” he said. “We actually sent the contract to Chuck (Thornton, who manages the Sportsplex) and we’re rocking and rolling.”
Massenburg said two networks, ESPN and Fox, have expressed interest in televising.
