Hampton University hired Eugene Marshall Jr., as athletic director, the school announced Thursday.
Marshall will replace Novelle Dickenson, HU's longtime faculty member who spent the past two years as AD, but expressed an interest to return to teaching and academic affairs.
Marshall, 55, has worked in college athletics for more than 30 years and spent his entire professional career in the northeast.
He comes to HU from Queens (N.Y.) College, where he was interim deputy athletic director. Prior to that, he was A.D. for two years at Iona College, where the men's basketball team made back-to-back NCAA tournaments. He resigned at Iona in April 2013, citing family reasons.
Marshall worked two stints at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J., in 2010-11 as acting athletic director and from 1998-2005 as athletic director and coach.
He worked as Deputy Director of Athletics at the U.S. Military Academy from 2005-10. He also worked at the College of Staten Island and at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Marshall is a 1981 graduate of Northeastern, where he played basketball for Jim Calhoun.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
