Gloucester won the Southeast Regional on Tuesday in Live Oak, Fla., to earn a berth in the 12/60 Cal Ripken World Series in Winchester, Mass., from Aug. 8-16.
The county's all-star squad finished 6-1 in the tournament. It twice defeated Eastern North Carolina, each time by a 5-4 score, in the championship round.
In the first of those games, Brett Lindsay pitched a four-hitter, had a hit and drove in two runs. He was named the game's MVP. Grayson Womble doubled and scored the winning run.
In the second game against Eastern North Carolina, Womble pitched 5 1/3 innings and was named the game's MVP. Hunter Martin earned a save.
Cash Watkins had two hits and two RBIs, Brett Lindsay hit a two-run single, and Cody Buffington had an RBI single.
As the "12/60" designation indicates, the game is played by 11- and 12-year-olds, with 60 feet between bases and a pitching distance of 46 feet.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
