Oklahoma takes command in 12th, beats UConn | Blacksburg Regional

BLACKSBURG — Oklahoma advanced into commanding position in the NCAA baseball tournament's Blacksburg Regional with a 5-3 win Saturday against Connecticut in 12 innings.

With the victory, Oklahoma will play at 5:30 against the winner of Sunday's 1 p.m. game. UConn will play Virginia Tech at 1 p.m.

The loser of the 1 p.m. game will be eliminated from the tournament. The winner must beat the Sooners twice to advance.

Oklahoma (42-19) scored the final two runs in the 12th inning via a one-out RBI triple by Max White and a one-out RBI by Hector Lorenzana, who reached base via a throwing error by second baseman LJ Mazzilli. White's triple got over the head of UConn center fielder Billy Ferriter, who was playing "in" during White's at-bat.

UConn (35-27) got a runner on base in the bottom of the 12th on a one-out single by Vinny Siena, but Bobby Melley lined into a double play to end the game. Melley was UConn's hero in the eighth inning, when he grounded out to second base to score Ferriter and tie the game at 3.

Kyle Hayes (1-0) worked 2 1/3 innings in relief to get the win for Oklahoma, giving up two hits and no runs while walking one. Pat Butler (3-2), who got out of a bases-loaded jam in the 11th by inducing an inning-ending double play, took the loss. He pitched 1 2/3 innings, surrendering two hits and two earned runs, while walking one and striking out one.
