Those last three seasons | After 13 playoff appearances in 15 seasons, Surry won only six games the last three years, including back-to-back 1-9 seasons.
Kentucky Derby time? | Coach Ervin Jones uses a horse racing analogy in describing this year's team. Says Jones: "We have the horses in the stall now."
Making the most with what they have | Surry won't have large numbers. Jones expects to carry a varsity roster of about 32 players.

Diggs is drawing recruiting interest from several in-state schools, including Richmond and VMI.
Ninth year (43-45)
Jones is a familiar figure in Surry County. He has been associated with the high school football team for 31 years, plus he serves as the county's recreation director.
Surry won back-to-back Division 1 state championships in 1988 and 1989 after two straight runner-up finishes. In 1988, the Cougars won for the first time in a big way, beating J.I. Burton 46-6. The year before, Surry couldn't hold a three-touchdown halftime lead. This year, after leading 23-6 at the break, the Cougars scored 23 more third-quarter points to turn the game into a runaway.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
