Phoebus girls 3rd in regional track, Brown wins twice

HAMPTON — For the past four years, the final results of the Eastern Region meet have been predictable. When all was said and done, Chesapeake's Western Branch left the meet with the biggest trophies for both the boys and girls.

The Bethel boys and Phoebus girls, victors in the Peninsula District meet last week, were the area's best bets to put a dent in the Western Branch machine this weekend.

On the girls side, the contest was over before Saturday's events started. On the strength of Friday's field events, Western Branch built a comfortable lead on the first day, then extended the gap to as many as 80 points, before tapering off to win with 107.33 points. Phoebus was the district's best placing team, taking home a third place trophy, a showing which should bode well for next week's state meet.

Things were not as easy on the boys end as the Western Branch team started among the leaders. But four placings in the 55-meter hurdles earned the Bruins 19 points and put coach Claude Toukene's squad into the lead for the first time. The team held off challenges from Ocean Lakes and Grassfield to earn its sixth straight crown.

Phoebus' Carolyn Brown was the district's only double winner. Brown won the 55 in 7.09 seconds, then came back later in the afternoon to capture the 300. This fastest heat was the closest thing to an all-Peninsula event as four of the six runners were from the PD. In the race, Bethel's Anise Cuffee jumped out to an early lead, but Brown reeled in her competition down the backstretch and held off Cuffee to win with a time of 40.04.

Brown was also second in the high jump with a 5-4 effort. Both she and Cox's Chenera Lacey missed three attempts at 5-6, but Lacey won based on fewer misses at the lower heights.

In her other running event, Brown also anchored the Phantom 800-meter relay, which included Vamonie Boddie, Shamara Russell and Jazmine Vaughn, to a second place finish.

The Bethel boys 800-meter relay team of Rashawn Proctor, Dominique Mcbride, Derrian Flemming and Kebari Cheseman won a gold medal for the Peninsula, pulling away from Norview and Western Branch for a comfortable 1:31.20 win.

And in the day's final event, the 1600-meter relay, the Bethel teams swept. The girls took home the gold as Haley Savoy, Cuffee, Ashley Greenle and Maya Moore posted a season-best time of 3:57.00. The boys followed suit with Flemming, William Brown, Mcbride and Cheseman bringing the baton home first in 3:27.46.

Overall, it was a tough weekend for most of the Peninsula teams. Bethel took sixth for both the boys and girls. But no other Peninsula team cracked the top ten in points and four were shut out entirely.

All of the Peninsula qualifiers will be back at the Boo Williams Sportsplex next weekend for the AAA State Championships.
