VIRGINIA BEACH — Gloucester's Makayla Jenkins pitched a one-hitter as the Dukes beat the First Colonial Patriots 1-0 Tuesday at Princess Anne High to secure their first berth in the Group AAA state softball tournament.
Jenkins struck out 10 batters and allowed only four baserunners in seven innings in the Eastern Region semifinal.
The Dukes scored the only run in the second inning when Shelby Alto beat a throw to first to bring home Noodle Allen.
Jenkins had her no-hit bid come to an end when First Colonial's Maddie King slid into first base for an infield single, just beating Jenkins' throw.
Gloucester will face Great Bridge in the regional final at 6 p.m. Thursday at Princess Anne.
