Thursday's local college roundup: Tribe opens exhibition basketball tour of Dominican Republic with open-air victory

Daily Press

Men's basketball:

William and Mary won its opener Thursday on an exhibition trip to the Dominican Republic, defeating Ebaheba, a La Romana pro select team, 83-73 in an open-air arena with roof and walls.

Playing under international rules, including a 24-second shot clock and a longer 3-point distance than the NCAA uses, The Tribe shot 50 percent from the floor and used a decisive fourth-quarter run to prevail.

Junior guard Marcus Thornton had 22 points on 8-of-13 shooting from the floor, including a 5-of-6 effort from 3-point range. Senior forward Tim Rusthoven had 20 points and seven rebounds. He shot 7-of-10 from the field and 6-of-7 from the free-throw line.

Senior guard Brandon Britt rounded out the Tribe’s double-digit scorers with 15 points, hitting 5-of-9 from 3-point range. Freshman Omar Prewitt had nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Women’s soccer:

Two William and Mary players were named to the All-Colonial Athletic Association preseason team: senior Dani Rutter — who had seven goals and three assists last season — and junior defender Emily Fredrickson.

Also, sophomore midfielder Leci Irvin received honorable mention.

Former Hampton High pitcher Steve Hux was among the players announced by Division II Chowan in its 2013-14 recruiting class.
