Admirals suffer blow in AHL playoff race, stumble against Checkers

Daily Press

No. 1 star Rob Madore made 37 saves Tuesday as the host Charlotte Checkers slowed Norfolk’s drive for an AHL playoff berth, beating the Admirals 3-1.

Brandon McMillan scored gave the Admirals a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal with 26 seconds left in the first period, but the Checkers pulled even on Beau Schmitz’s goal late in the middle period. Charlotte, the Carolina Hurricanes' top affiliate, went ahead for good on Casey Pierro-Zabotel’s goal 31 seconds into the final period.

Zach Boychuk’s power-play goal at 15:25 of the third all but sealed the outcome for the Admirals, who are tied for ninth place in the Eastern Conference with Manchester, four points behind Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Hershey, who share seventh place.

Eight East teams will reach the playoffs.
