August is Craft Beer Month and Smartmouth Brewing Co. located in the West Ghent section of Norfolk will be offering special beer creations.
On Wednesdays in August, Smartmouth Brewing Co. will have a special cask-conditioned beer in the tasting room. As the brewery explain it, cask ale, or real ale as it is sometimes called, is beer that has not been filtered or pasteurized;. It’s transferred straight from the fermenter into the cask along with some priming sugar.
Smartmouth is using a firkin cask that holds more than 10 gallons of beer. Today, Aug. 7, the first firkin will feature beer with Amber Ale Strisselspalt & Cluster hops. Cowcatcher Milk Stout, flavored with mint and cocoa, will return on Wednesday, Aug. 14.
The brewery currently has seven beers on tap in the tasting room, including three Pale Ales. The large tasting room is open from 4:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesdays-Fridays and noon to 7 p.m. Saturdays. Free tours of the brewery are available every hour on Saturdays.
