USS enterprise Newport News Shipbuilding provided by Thomas Coleman of Hampton On Sept. 24, 1960, the wife of Secretary of the navy William B. Franke christened the USS Enterprise by smashing a champagne bottle across the ship's bow. The crowd shown here gathered at Newport News Shipbuilding to watch the ceremony for the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The ship had been built at the Newport News shipyard and would be commissioned to the Navy on Nov. 25, 1961. This USS Enterprise was the second carrier to carry that name. The first was christened at Newport News Shipbuilding in 1936. Photo courtesy of Thomas Coleman of Hampton.
