Confederate Capt. Franklin Buchanan

¿Old Buck¿ Buchanan was a grizzled old tar with 47 years of service when he led the pioneering ironclad CSS Virginia -- also known as the Merrimack -- into the historic Battle of Hampton Roads. But his tall, commanding presence and aggressive tactics helped inflict the U.S. Navy's worst defeat before Pearl Harbor. He was standing on deck cursing and firing his rifle when he was wounded in the thigh and -- despite his protests -- taken below.
