3. Phoebus football

This, folks, is a dynasty. Phoebus’ 36-17 victory over Stone Bridge in the Group AAA Division 5 state championship on Dec. 11 gave the Phantoms their third consecutive state title and their 45th straight victory. During the season, the Phantoms also broke rival Hampton’s state record for consecutive victories. The win capped Phoebus’ third consecutive 15-0 season and saw the Phantoms erase a deficit for the third straight game. Phoebus’ title streak has produced a lengthy list of past and present-day stars and has even survived a coaching change, as ex-Phoebus assistant Stan Sexton took over from longtime coach Bill Dee two seasons ago in a smooth transition that has netted back-to-back championships.
