Culinary teams from five Newport News high schools will compete in a Chef's Challenge beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11, at Menchville High School.
Each team consists of a cafeteria manager and cook from the same school, a culinary student from the New Horizons culinary program that Newport News schools participates in, and a culinary student from the Culinary Institute of Virginia. RD Fresh, a Florida-based company that provides walk-in refrigeration units for schools and restaurants, is the sponsor.
Each team will create an entree and vegetable out of a list of ingredients. First and second prizes will be awarded, and the winning entry will be added to the schools’ menus.
The team of judges for the event will include Travis Brust, executive chef of the Williamsburg Inn; Steve Gerson, owner of RD Fresh; Mary Lou Rousseau, assistant superintendent for business and support in the Newport News school system; Shelly Simmonds, a member of the Newport News School Board; and one student judge.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
