Revisiting the heyday of department stores and five-and-dimes

Shop freshest foods at farmers' markets

Daily Press

There's nothing fresher and more flavorful than berries plucked from the vine, corn snapped off the stalk or fish pulled from the bay.

Especially when those good eats are purchased from producers at local farmers' markets.

If you crave the good taste and nutrition of fruits, veggies and meats straight from southeastern Virginia, you'll find an abundant selection at Saturday morning farmers' markets in Williamsburg, Smithfield, Suffolk, Yorktown, Mathews, Newport News and now downtown Hampton.

In addition, most of the markets feature other sought-after products such as baked goods, garden plants, herbs and supplies, pastas, chocolates, pork, home-grown mushrooms, cheeses, peanuts, crafts and seasonal gifts.
