Now we know why state Sen. Henry Marsh and Del. Algie Howell resigned early from the General Assembly. Gov. Terry McAuliffe tapped them both today for jobs in his administration.
McAuliffe named Marsh one of three commissioners to the state's Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. He named Howell, formerly D-Norfolk, to the the state's parole board.
Both appointments must be confirmed by the General Assembly, but given all the nice things legislators from both sides of the aisle had to say about Howell and Marsh when they announced their resignations, that probably won't be a problem.
Unlike with McAuliffe's initial choice for this ABC board posting, Boyd Marcus.
Marsh will make $122,000 a year in his new job, and Howell $112,455, according to the governor's office.
Obviously that's better than the $18,000 or so in salary that legislators make a year. And since the state's employee retirement system averages the highest continuous 36 to 60 months of salary to calculate pension payments, these appointments could have a big impact post-retirement.
The governor announced a number of other appointments today, including Randy Wright, a former Norfolk City Councilman, as deputy director of the Virginia Lottery.
